Best Practice in Disease, Pest and Weed Management - Berlin, 10 - 12 May 2007

We thank delegates from 33 nations for attending the conference!

2nd International Symposium jointly organised by

the German Phytomedical Society (DPG) and the British Crop Production Council (BCPC)

in co-operation with the
Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture (LGF), Humboldt University Berlin,  and the
Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA),
now Julius-Kühn-Institute, Braunschweig and Berlin, Germany

supported by
the German Research Foundation (DFG)

The Symposium Topic

The production of plants for food or non-food uses requires complex strategies that must balance profitable and efficient farming with production quality (including environmental, product and process quality) and quantity concerns. Several production guidelines called "Best Management Practices," or BMPs, have been developed to benchmark existing processes and to give advice to producers, how to transform their farm operation into a Best Management System for plant production. BMPs provide the comprehensive guidelines to warrant economic, environmental and agronomic efficiency in plant production.

Plant disease, pest and weed management play a central role in plant production systems. The symposium, therefore, will focus on BMPs established in plant protection reflecting the ongoing public and scientific debate about benchmarking of existing practices in integrated plant protection and the development of alternative or innovative approaches.

Indicators for the environmental effects of production systems need to be provided and evaluated. Can new technologies and biotechnologies help to meet the future societal demands for a "safe" or "healthy" crop production?

This symposium provides the stage for experts from various related fields such as extension services, chemical or biotechnological companies, retailers, universities, research institutions non-governmental organisations and public authorities in order to synthesize a critical evaluation of the state of BMPs in crop protection, based on which a projection of future demands and developments should be derived.
